Mold on Documents: Immediate Actions
If you suspect mold, do not clean the documents, do not shake them out, and do not store them with the rest of the collection. Separate the affected items, prevent the spread of spores, and seek professional help.

Stop the source of moisture and cordon off the area if possible. If contact is necessary, wear appropriate personal protective equipment—at a minimum, a respirator—and handle the documents as little as possible.
Do not brush it off yourself
Brushing off dry debris or vacuuming without special equipment spreads spores and can pose a risk to both materials and health. Alcohol, household cleaners, and air fresheners are also unsuitable.
Store in a dry place and keep separate
Damp items require prompt, professionally supervised drying. Items that are already dry but appear suspicious should be marked and stored separately in a clean environment.

If there is active mold growth, a musty odor, multiple affected boxes, valuable originals, or health risks, a professional assessment is recommended.
